A historic town with new edges
Platteville sits on US 85 at about 4,820 feet, a town of roughly 3,000 on flat river-valley ground with the Fort Vasquez trading-post museum on its south edge. The housing runs in three layers: early-1900s homes in Old Town, 1970s–2000s ranches between them and the highway, and 2010s–2020s subdivisions — Pelican Lake Ranch, Gateway — on the edges, where lots are level with no mature tree to shade a south-facing yard.
Downtown that's usually a small deck or porch replaced within a tight setback; in the newer subdivisions, it's upgrading the code-minimum builder deck or building the first real one.
Permits through Town Hall, reviewed by SAFEbuilt
The Town of Platteville handles permits through Town Hall at 400 Grand Avenue. SAFEbuilt plans examiners review the submittal and conduct the inspections on the town's behalf. Decks and covered patios both require a permit, and the town posts an Uncovered Decks & Porches guide. We draw the plans, submit them, and run inspections. Parcels outside town limits file with Weld County, and we confirm the jurisdiction from your address.
River-valley ground, plains weather
Platteville publishes no design criteria, so the regional Weld County values govern: 30 psf ground snow, 115 mph three-second-gust wind, and a 30-inch frost depth. Wind is the structural number on these lots. A covered patio or pergola is engineered for uplift, with roof connectors and post bases sized to hold in a spring gale. Footings are drilled below frost into river-valley clay that heaves a shallow pad.
Hail and sun decide the surface. Weld County is hail country, and a south-facing deck takes UV that fails a wood finish in two seasons. Capped composite takes both without a refinishing schedule. If you are still weighing wood, we will lay out both sides at the site visit.
What we build in Platteville
In Pelican Lake Ranch and Gateway, the typical project pairs a 300–400 square foot composite deck with a covered section so it is usable in July heat — designed as one structure rather than a cover bolted on later. Slim aluminum railing keeps the open view. In Old Town, the work is fitting a deck inside a small setback and matching the scale of an older house. We price the cover as its own line so you can see what the shade costs. We're a Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators dealer, and every build carries our two-year workmanship warranty.
Repair or replace
Platteville has plenty of decks whose surfaces have failed on frames that have not. We inspect the ledger, posts, footings, and hardware first. Sound structure gets a re-deck at $20–$35 per square foot; a failed ledger or footings above frost get a replacement plan. Findings come in writing, with photos.
Fifty-five minutes up US 85
Platteville is about fifty-five minutes from our Centennial shop, straight up US 85 past Fort Lupton and short of Gilcrest. We block these US 85 towns so a crew is on site for consecutive days. The drive shapes scheduling, not the price or the guarantee.
