From the foothills to the grassland
Boulder County runs from canyon towns against the Front Range out onto open grassland toward the Weld County line, and almost everything about building here follows from that geography. The eastern towns sit on wind-exposed ground with a clear run to the foothills; Lyons tucks into the St. Vrain canyon mouth on genuine foothills lots; and the December 2021 Marshall Fire — which burned through Louisville, Superior, and unincorporated grassland between them — made ember exposure a permanent part of how this county thinks about construction.
Where we build in Boulder County
Each of the county's communities has its own page and its own particulars: Boulder itself, the county seat with housing from every era; Louisville, where attached decks require a structural engineer and rebuild-era homes are finishing their outdoor spaces; Lafayette, the county's east-side neighbor with a deep mix of old and new housing; Longmont, the county's second city on the northern plains; Superior, rebuilt and building fire-aware on open grassland; Erie, which straddles the county line on exposed prairie lots; and Lyons, the foothills town at the canyon mouth with the county's newest wildfire code.
Fire-aware by default
We build every Boulder County deck as if embers are a design load, because here they are. That means capped composite or mineral-based surfaces instead of untreated softwood, framing bays closed or screened so embers cannot nest, and undersides that are not designed as storage. Lyons has now made part of that mandatory: its Wildfire Resiliency Code requirements take effect July 1, 2026, and new and replacement deck walking surfaces must meet non-combustibility standards. We consider the whole approach baseline practice countywide, not an upgrade.
Wind and engineering
The county's engineering culture is real and earned. Chinook windstorms come off the foothills with force, which makes uplift — not snow — the governing load on any pergola or patio cover, and it makes engineered post bases, rated hardware, and properly sized footings non-negotiable on exposed lots. Louisville formalizes the instinct: decks structurally attached to a home there must be engineered by a Colorado-licensed structural engineer. We design to these requirements from the first drawing rather than discovering them at plan review.
Permits across seven jurisdictions
Boulder, Louisville, Lafayette, Longmont, Superior, Erie (on its Boulder-side addresses), and Lyons each run their own building departments; unincorporated parcels file with Boulder County. Same project, seven possible counters, each with its own submittal expectations — we confirm your jurisdiction, prepare the right packet, and manage inspections through final sign-off. Our permit guide covers the general process.
Honest distance from Centennial
Boulder County runs about forty-five minutes to an hour from our Centennial shop, and we schedule builds here in blocks so crews stay in the area. That shapes our calendar, never your price or the guarantee behind the work. Start with the cost calculator for a real planning number, then tell us what you're planning.
