Concrete or Pavers? The Real Comparison for Patios and Walkways

It's the most common question we get on patio projects: poured concrete or pavers? The marketing on both sides is loud, the price quotes can be surprisingly close, and the right answer depends on factors most homeowners don't think about until after the project is done. This guide gets specific on cost, lifespan, maintenance, and the climate realities that matter in Colorado.

What You're Actually Choosing Between

Poured concrete is one continuous slab — mixed on-site, poured into forms, finished smooth or textured, optionally stamped or stained. Once it cures, it's a single monolithic surface.

Pavers are individual units — concrete, brick, or natural stone — set on a compacted gravel and sand base with sand swept into the joints. The surface flexes as a system rather than acting as one solid piece.

Both can look great. Both can fail badly when installed poorly. The difference is in how they behave over time.

Cost: Closer Than You Think

A 400 sq ft patio runs roughly $3,200–5,600 in standard concrete versus $5,600–9,600 in concrete pavers. Stamped concrete and entry-level pavers often quote within a few hundred dollars of each other — which is exactly when the durability difference should decide it.

Where Concrete Wins

Lower upfront cost. For plain or lightly finished installs, concrete wins by 20–40%.

Faster install. A typical patio is poured in a day, walkable in 24–48 hours, fully cured in 28 days. Pavers take 2–4 days of skilled labor for the same area.

Smooth, continuous surface. Better for furniture, easier for a walker or wheelchair, no joints to catch heels or table legs.

Fewer weeds. No joints, no place for seeds to land.

Modern aesthetic. Plain or polished concrete fits contemporary architecture in a way pavers don't.

Where Pavers Win

Cracks don't ruin the project. This is the big one in Colorado. Concrete will crack — control joints manage where, not whether. Pavers don't crack as a system because hundreds of joints absorb the movement.

Repairable. A damaged paver gets pulled and replaced in 20 minutes for the cost of the unit. A cracked slab gets patched (visible) or replaced (expensive).

No curing window. Walk on them the day they're installed.

Permeable options. Permeable paver systems can infiltrate over 100 inches of rain per hour when new — increasingly relevant as HOAs and municipal codes restrict impervious surface coverage.

Better resale value, generally. Appraisers and agents in our market consistently value a paver patio above the equivalent concrete one.

More design flexibility. Patterns, borders, color blends, integrated fire pits and seat walls. Stamped concrete mimics this, but it's the most failure-prone form of concrete patio there is — the texture wears, the color fades, and the cracks still come.

The Colorado-Specific Reality

Our climate is close to the worst case for concrete. The Front Range sees roughly 35–90 freeze-thaw cycles a year — water enters hairline cracks, freezes, expands about 9%, and widens them every winter. Expansive bentonite clay soils shift with moisture and can heave an under-built slab 1–2 inches, cracking anything poured without adequate reinforcement and joint spacing.

Pavers handle this far better because they flex. A properly built paver patio looks essentially the same in year 20 as in year 1. A concrete patio in the same spot will have visible cracks, possible settling, and likely surface scaling from de-icer exposure.

That doesn't make concrete wrong here — it makes the spec non-negotiable:

  • 4 inches minimum thickness (5 inches for vehicle loads)
  • 4,000+ PSI air-entrained mix with 5–7% entrained air — the air pockets are what absorb freeze expansion
  • Reinforcement (rebar or fiber mesh)
  • Control joints every 8–10 feet, cut to a quarter of slab depth
  • Compacted base, not slab-on-clay

Cutting any of those corners saves money up front and costs more in year 5.

For pavers, the equivalent spec: 6–8 inches of compacted road base, 1 inch of bedding sand, pavers at least 2⅜ inches (60 mm) thick, solid edge restraint, and polymeric sand in the joints. The base does the work; a paver patio fails from the bottom, not the top.

Maintenance Reality Check

Concrete: Re-seal every 2–3 years if stamped or stained, every ~5 years if plain — about $0.50–1.50 per sq ft hired out. Repair cracks as they appear. No de-icer at all in the first winter, and sand instead of salt after that — chloride de-icers (including the mag chloride tracked in off the street) scale the surface.

Pavers: Re-sand the joints every 2–4 years ($1–2 per sq ft with polymeric sand, which hardens and resists weeds). Pull and reset individual pavers that settle. Optional sealer every 3–5 years.

Ten-year math on a 400 sq ft patio: standard concrete ≈ $3,200–5,600 up front plus 2–3 reseals and crack work, call it $600–1,500 over the decade if nothing heaves. Pavers ≈ $5,600–9,600 up front plus one or two re-sands, $400–1,600. The upfront gap mostly holds — what pavers buy is the year-20 condition and the 20-minute repair.

A Quick Decision Framework

Choose concrete if:

  • Budget is the dominant constraint
  • You want a modern, minimalist look
  • The patio is sheltered (under a covered porch) where freeze-thaw exposure is limited
  • You're okay with eventual cracks and don't plan to sell soon

Choose pavers if:

  • You're staying long-term and want a surface that looks new for decades
  • The patio sits in full sun and full freeze-thaw exposure
  • You want design complexity — curves, patterns, integrated features
  • Resale value matters
  • Your soil is reactive clay (common along the Front Range)

Avoid stamped concrete unless you're committed to re-sealing every 2 years and accepting that the texture will wear and the color will fade.

For a Colorado homeowner weighing the long view, pavers are usually the better investment despite the higher upfront cost. For a tight budget, a simple, well-built broom-finish concrete patio is honest and durable. The wrong answer for almost everyone is cheap, thin, under-jointed concrete — plain or stamped. That's where most homeowner regret lives.
